Afterburner Engineering: Thermal Catalytic Smoke & Odor Abatement in Urban Districts
Roasting coffee in retail business centers, shopping malls, or residential neighborhoods requires strict compliance with municipal clean air standards. Learn how RC Afterburners achieve 99.4% smoke elimination.
The Chemistry of Coffee Roasting Emissions
During the exothermic phase of a coffee roast—particularly from First Crack through Second Crack—heavy smoke laden with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), fatty acids, aldehydes, and microscopic particulate matter is discharged through the exhaust.
In urban locations, this creates dense plumes and strong odors that violate municipal environmental regulations and generate neighbor complaints.
High-Temperature Thermal Oxidation
The RC Afterburner AB-30 / AFTB series channels roaster exhaust gases through a heavy refractory ceramic combustion chamber where a secondary low-NOx premix burner incinerates all VOCs and particulates at temperatures between 650°C and 750°C.
Organic pollutants are converted into clean, odorless water vapor and harmless CO2. The resulting discharge from the chimney stack is transparent and compliant with European and international municipal air quality codes.
