High-Temperature Bearing Lubrication for Coffee Roasters: Grease Types & Intervals

By Mohsen Ghasemi, Field Service Director · Maintenance · 6 min read

Preventing seized drum shafts: selecting food-grade high-temperature synthetic grease rated up to 280°C, relubrication intervals, and bearing failure signs.

The Harsh Operating Environment of Drum Shaft Bearings

The front and rear shaft bearings on a commercial coffee roaster endure severe thermal and mechanical punishment. Situated directly adjacent to the roasting drum, these bearings operate under continuous exposure to 180°C–240°C temperatures, acidic coffee oil aerosols, and fine carbon particulate dust.

Using standard automotive grease will cause oil separation within hours, leaving hardened soap residue that seizes the drum bearing and destroys the shaft.

Required Lubricant Specifications:

- Temperature Rating: High-temperature synthetic grease with continuous operation rating of -30°C to +260°C (intermittent up to +280°C). - Thickener Type: PTFE (Fluoropolymer), Polyurea, or Complex Calcium Sulphonate. Avoid standard lithium or aluminium complex greases that degrade above 160°C. - Base Oil: Synthetic perfluoropolyether (PFPE) or PAO high-viscosity oil. - Food-Grade Certification: NSF H1 food-grade registered grease for incidental food contact safety.

Recommended Lubrication Frequency:

| Roastery Weekly Hours | Relubrication Schedule | Quantity per Bearing | |---|---|---| | Under 15 Hours / Week | Every 8 Weeks | 1 manual pump (approx. 1.2g) | | 15 - 35 Hours / Week | Every 4 Weeks | 1 - 2 manual pumps | | 35+ Hours / Week (Daily Shift) | Every 2 Weeks | 2 manual pumps |

Crucial Warning: Never over-grease a roaster bearing. Overfilling the bearing housing causes churning, excessive friction heat, and blows out the protective shaft seal, allowing coffee dust to enter the ball raceway.
